About Hungarian

Hungarian is the official language of Hungary. There are 13.5 million Hungarians in the world, out of which 9.5 million people live in Hungary, 2.5 million people live in the neighboring countries (especially in Romania, Slovakia, Serbia and Ukraine) and around 2 million people live in other parts of the world.

The liguistinc heritage of the Hungarians comes from the Finno-Ugric people. A branch of Uralic speakers migrated from their earlier homeland near the Ural mountains and settled in various places in Eastern Europe, untile they conquered the Carpathian Basin between the 9th and 10th centuries.

The most important symbols are the Holy Crown, the Turul and the flag. The most important and wellknown products are the Hungarian Goulash, the chimney cake, the Unicum, the pálinka, the Tokaji wine and the Dobos cake. The most visited places are Budapest, Balaton, Dunakanyar and the Hortobágyi National Park. Many well known composers were born in Hungary such as Ferenc Liszt, Béla Bartók and Zoltán Kodály. Hungary has also many famous scientists like the mathematician Pál Erdős, or Albert Szent-Györgyi who discovered vitamin C.
